Adding Meter Entities before installation causing communication errors

We install loggers at our clients sites and since we I do not do the installation but only the configuration, I set up the loggers in the office and the installers install them when out on site. They will then call me to check whether the devices are communicating and if data is successfully pulled through.
What I have encountered, is that if the Entity is added to PNPScada before the actual installation, I receive errors in the Communication monitor saying the serial numbers do not match or that the data could not be placed into the Data Base. At first I thought I may have mistyped the Serial numbers and went to site to confirm this. The only way I could get proper communication was to remove the meter and account entities and re-add them.
My question is, am I missing a step here or is there a back end function preventing this kind of operation?
