I agree that this is quite a complex problem.
This happens when an invalid total is logged.
In a nutshell, the total we got from the meter was smaller than the previous total we got from the meter.
A further explanation:
Sometimes this is legitimate as the total register on the meter has reclocked.
So we try to assume that the meter's total register has indeed reclocked.
We use the maximum value that the register could be times 2, subtract the previous (bigger) reading and add the new (smaller) reading.
If it really was a reclock, this should give us the correct new total.
Then we run a little audit to see that this new total matches up with the profile logged by the meter.
If this audit fails we log the event that you see there.
